A Memoir of Grief, Surrender, Adoption, and Hope
What happens when the life you always imagined begins to change shape?
For as long as I can remember, I believed motherhood would be part of my story. It felt less like a dream and more like a future quietly waiting for me. But after years of infertility, endometriosis, grief, and unanswered questions, the future I expected began to unravel.
Held in Waiting is a deeply personal short memoir about surrender, faith, adoption, and the quiet work of becoming ready. Written after approval but before a match, this is not a completed adoption story. It is the story of loving future children before knowing their names.
In this book, I share the road that led my husband, Sean, and me toward adoption from foster care. It is a story of longing, loss, healing, remarriage, paperwork, training, hard questions, home study interviews, and the deep hope that began growing for children we had not yet met.

This book was written during a very specific season of our lives: after Sean and I were approved to adopt, but before we knew the children who may one day become part of our family. That in-between place felt important to honor.
So often, adoption stories are told after the child comes home. Those stories are beautiful, but this one is different. Held in Waiting is the story before the meeting. It is the story of everything that happened before the match, before placement, before finalization, and before our future children’s names became known to us. It is the story of becoming ready.
Writing this book helped me reflect on the many forms waiting has taken in my life. I waited for motherhood, for answers, for healing, for clarity, for peace, and eventually for the courage to believe that a different kind of family could still be beautiful.
